Hamoudi to attend Book Group Expo 2008: Howling in Mesopotamia author on panel: Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda
Hamider ala Hamoudi, author of Howling in Mesopotamia will be attanding the 2008 Book Group Expo as a panalist on the topic Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda where he will discuss his experiences returning to Iraq in 2003 after "mission accomplished."

Book Group Expo is a two day salon designed especially for book lovers. Book group members and avid readers have a chance to meet some of their favorite authors and meet and connect with people in other book groups. Featured authors this year include: Marissa de la Santos, Selden Edwards, Terry McMillan, David Sheff and more.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

In this groundbreaking memoir, Haider Ala Hamoudi invites the reader to share his experiences in Iraq during the war that followed the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s regime. Through personal stories—about a walk on a busy Baghdad street, the momentous day Hussein’s sons were killed, the tragic killing of hundreds of civillians on one of Shi’a Islam’s most holy days, and even the joyous occasion of Hamoudi’s own wedding—he reveals the unique culture and personality of Iraq and its warm, generous, but frightened citizens. Hamoudi’s raw account, taken from the diary he kept beginning in 2003, opens with the great national and personal hopes he and all other Iraqis had for their country, but ultimately reflects the fear and uncertainty that pervade Iraq today.

Famed conservative pundit Bruce Herschensohn, author of Above Empyrean: A Novel of the Final Days of the War on Islamic Terrorism will appear on “Hannity & Colmes” Thursday, July 16 to discuss his new book, the upcoming election, national security concerns, and what worries him about America’s current direction.

Fearful of weakened U.S. resolve to address the real and ongoing threat Americans face from terrorism both at home and abroad, Herschensohn set out to present the world he fears may come to pass. If terrorists took over America, would we let democracy perish? Ann Coulter has called him “principled, courageous and insightful;” while Steve Forbes has praised Herschensohn as “an astute observer of our world scene today.” He has served two Presidents, taught at several universities across the country including Harvard, and worked closely with Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn who said of him, "If all Americans were like [Herschensohn], America certainly would not perish."

About the Author:

Bruce Herschensohn is a fixture in American politics. He has received the Distinguished Service Medal, served as Deputy Special Assistant to President Nixon, was appointed a member of the Reagan Transition Team, and was the 1992 Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in California. He has been a political commentator on KABC-TV and KABC-Radio. Herschensohn has taught at the University of Maryland, occupied the Nixon Chair at Whittier College, was a Fellow at the John F. Kennedy Institute of Politics at Harvard University, and Distinguished Fellow of the Claremont Institute. He has worked with Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and since 1998 has taught at the School of Public Policy of Pepperdine University where he has been Chairman of the Board and is currently a Senior Fellow. Herschensohn is also a Non-Resident Associate Fellow of the Nixon Center and serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for Individual Freedom.

With an audacity that vilifies O.J. Simpson more than any other author could, Simpson himself provides a fictional tell-all account of the murders of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown. Simpson seems to be more concerned about how the press poorly portrayed the facts—not about his murderous acts but of his personal life and relationship with Nicole. When he's not lamenting about how he is misunderstood, he's playing arm-chair therapist for Nicole (claiming she was involved with drugs, constantly erratic and still hopelessly longing for him). Simpson insists it was Nicole's actions that ultimately forced him to murder her. With an exclusive commentary read by Kim Goldman (Ron Goldman's sister), an account of writing the book with Simpson by ghostwriter Pablo F. Fenjves and an afterword by Dominick Dunne, listeners get an interesting balancing act of interests and motives for the publication of this story. G. Valmont Thomas eerily embraces Simpson's sound and speech patterns, making the audiobook more disturbing than the book. Hearing Simpson's words at his most enraged, listeners will be impressed and possibly frightened with how well Thomas delivers this first-person narrative. A Beaufort Books hardcover. (Nov.)

Margaret Ahnert, author of The Knock at the Door has won the New York Book Festivals Best Historical Memoir Award. They had originally honored her with Best Fiction, which Ahnert was forced to decline given the serious focus of the memoir, her mother's experience during the Armenian genocide. Upon learning of the error, festival organizers immediately recognized the innappropriateness of the category and ammended the win to Best Historical Memoir.

Ahnert will be recognized at the inagural kickoff at the Algonquin Hotel Friday evening. The New York Book Festival returns to New York this weekend, Saturday, June 28 in Central Park from 10am -6pm.
