As my internship with Beaufort Books and Spencer Hill Press comes to an end, I find myself on the cusp of new beginnings. I started my internship in January, when New York City was dusted with snow and the winds could blow you away. We skipped spring and are fully embracing summer with stifling heat and intense summer storms. On this threshold of summer, I also find myself on the threshold of the future.
Throughout my time here at Beaufort Books and Spencer Hill, I have worked on manuscripts, conducted research, written press releases, and inputted financial data. In the welcoming atmosphere of the office, it has been a great place to work and learn about every aspect of publishing. It is so much more than reading manuscripts! So much goes into the publication of a book and seeing each stage of bringing a book to life has been such an interesting and fulfilling experience. As an intern under the managing editors, I have not stayed in one department but have worked on countless projects throughout the season. I have been able to learn about every aspect of publishing, not just the editorial side, which has allowed me to figure out what interests me the most. But as summer looms, I am now tasked with the difficulty of figuring out what is next for me.
Summer marks the end of a school year but also the end of my routine from the last nine months. For the next few months, I am in a weird limbo of adulthood – living and working in New York but still trying to figure out my future. Interning here has given me an idea of where I want my future to go but it is now up to me to make that happen. As I spend my last week here, I am struck by the openness of what is in store thanks to the skills I have gained with BB/SHP. From every ending comes a new beginning, and while my time at Beaufort is at its end, I now have endless possibilities for what comes next.
Thank you to Megan and Karen for giving me to opportunity to learn about the publishing industry. I wish you all the best in the future!
