At Beaufort Books, we love to provide mentorship to those looking to start their career in the publishing industry. We do this through unpaid, remote internships. We are currently CLOSED for internship applications.

The unpaid internship offers the exciting opportunity to be immersed in publishing and learn about the publishing industry in a hands-on way. This role works closely with our editorial team, while also providing occasional assistance with marketing, publicity, and other administrative tasks.

What to expect from an internship at Beaufort Books

Primary intern tasks include (but are not limited to):

  • Assisting with reading slush, partial, and full manuscripts and write brief reader’s reports
  • Drafting book descriptions and other jacket copy
  • With a detailed and precise eye, checking and fixing (if necessary) editor and proofreader corrections using Adobe Acrobat

Other tasks include:

  • Drafting press materials for books in a wide variety of genres
  • Creating and posting engaging social media content
  • Evaluating, developing, and helping execute new social strategies
  • Monitoring publicity hits
  • Using Canva to design graphics for a variety of marketing purposes, such as paid advertisements and Amazon A+ images

Who should apply

Applicants should be excellent writers, voracious readers, pay attention to detail, have a good editorial sense or want to develop one, feel comfortable working independently on projects, and be familiar with social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

We typically request that each intern has an available 10-15 hours/week (at least 2 full days), access to a working computer and reliable internet, and a willingness to take on new challenges and learn about all aspects of the publishing industry. Previous publishing experience is NOT required.

While many of our interns have been recent grads or are enrolled in college during their internship, we are open to applications from anyone interested in learning about the publishing industry.

Please note: due to the hands-on nature of the internship, we are unfortunately only able to accommodate applicants who are based in North America.
